Getting warm, Getting warm...

Global Warming

My wife is concerned about global warming. We had an argument in the car last night about my (mulish) refusal to acknowledge the cause of this – i.e., people and their wicked ways.

However, I insist to live happily in another Universe than she, in which people and their (admittedly) wicked ways are relatively insignificant in the master scheme.

In my universe, Nature reigns and people toss about on tiny liferafts, clinging for dear life. I’m not sure exactly why this is so reasurring to me, other than I kind of like a world governed by God, who placed us as a kind of toylike experiment on an unstable rock hurtling through space. Maybe God figured this would serve to cement our relationship, or at least give God something to do besides mediate spiritual infidelity.

It so develops, that this exact argument is ocurring among climatologists and astrophysicists.
Deriving from a 1976 article in Science by John Eddy, the argument for Nature goes like this: long term cycles of sunspots and other radiation from the Sun, spanning centuries, are an important cause of cycles of cooling and warming on Earth. The counterargument, the argument deriving from Man's wickedness, states that industrial and other emissions have been operating since the 1900's to degrade the protective layers of the atmosphere.
